Logs, Metrics, Events, and Traces: Four Voices Telling One Story

When a system behaves unexpectedly, the first instinct is to “look at the data.” But it quickly becomes clear there’s too much of it - and of completely different kinds.

Logs. Metrics. Events. Traces.

These aren’t different names for the same thing. They’re four different ways a system “talks” - and each one is meant to answer a different question.

Logs: What Happened Here, Exactly

Logs are the local story. They record what a specific component thought, did, or decided - at a specific point in time.

A good log:

  • Helps understand context
  • Tells an internal sequence
  • Is meant for human reading

But logs aren’t a snapshot. They’re not meant to answer “is the system healthy” - but rather “what happened here once something already went wrong.”

Too many logs don’t create clarity - they create noise.

Metrics: How the System Feels Over Time

Metrics are a view from above. Cumulative numbers: latency, throughput, error rate, memory usage.

They don’t tell a story - they draw a shape.

A good metric:

  • Is comparable over time
  • Enables trend detection
  • Helps identify that something is changing

But it won’t tell you why.

Metrics say: “there’s a problem here.” Not: “this is the reason.”

Events: Something Meaningful Happened

An event is a milestone. Not every action is an event - only what has systemic significance.

For example:

  • A model was swapped
  • A configuration changed
  • A component entered or left service

Events connect “before” to “after.” They let you ask: “what changed - and when.”

Without events, it’s hard to connect a change in behavior to a change in cause.

Traces: How a Request Moves Through the System

Traces follow a single request, end to end. Through every service, queue, and component it passes through.

This is the dimension most often missing in distributed systems: not what each component did - but how they all worked together for one request.

Traces let you:

  • Understand cumulative latency
  • Identify bottlenecks
  • See hidden interactions

Without traces, the system looks like a collection of disconnected parts.

The Analogy

Imagine a city:

  • Logs are the work diaries of every employee.
  • Metrics are the city’s dashboard.
  • Events are council decisions and policy changes.
  • Traces are the route of a single citizen through the city.

You can manage a city with just one of these - but you can’t truly understand it.

Observability isn’t one tool - it’s an entire language.

Logs, metrics, events, and traces don’t compete with each other - they complement each other.

A stable system doesn’t ask: “which one matters most?”

It asks: “what question am I trying to answer right now - and which tool will I use to answer it?”
