In complex software systems, the problem is almost never a lack of information. Quite the opposite - usually the problem is an excess of noise.
Logs, metrics, events, traces - everything flows nonstop. But when something truly goes wrong, that’s exactly when it’s hard to see what matters.
A good system doesn’t try to tell you everything. It chooses what to say - and when.
Log Flooding vs. Real Signal
One of the common intuitions is: “let’s add more logs, and then we’ll understand what’s happening.”
In practice, too many logs:
- Blur the anomaly
- Hide subtle behavioral changes
- Turn a simple issue into finding a needle in a haystack
When everything matters - nothing matters.
A real signal isn’t just another log line, it’s a meaningful deviation from what’s considered normal.
Why More Information Doesn’t Always Help
Information isn’t insight. More data doesn’t necessarily bring you closer to understanding - sometimes it pushes you further away.
A system that generates noise:
- Forces humans to filter manually
- Causes false alarms
- Trains people to ignore (“it’s always like that”)

Good observability isn’t measured by the amount of information, but by its precision.
A system “speaks quietly” when it:

- Separates symptom from cause
- Tells a coherent story, not an undecoded stream
Instead of asking: “what happened in each component?” it lets you ask: “what changed in the system as a whole?”
That’s the difference between static noise and a signal you can actually act on.

Imagine a control room where every sensor beeps constantly. Temperature is normal - beep. Voltage is stable - beep. Everything’s working - beep.
In a state like that, when something truly breaks - no one is listening anymore.
A good system is more like a medical device: quiet most of the time, and very precise when it chooses to alert.

Systems don’t need to be noisy to be smart. Quite the opposite - quiet is a sign of maturity.
A system that speaks less:
- Requires less human interpretation
