Why a Good System Limits Itself
The initial intuition says: a good system is a flexible one. One that doesn’t block, doesn’t limit, doesn’t say “no.”
But in complex systems - absolute freedom doesn’t produce power. It produces chaos.
What Happens When a System Sets No Limits
A system that doesn’t set limits for itself allows:
- Every component to operate at its own pace
- Every client to consume as much as it wants
- Every scenario to “figure itself out somehow”
On paper this looks accommodating, open, advanced. In reality - it’s a system giving up control.
Limits as a Sign of Maturity
Deliberate limits aren’t a sign of weakness, they’re a sign of design maturity.
A limit on:
- Request rate
- Payload size
- Number of connections
- Queue depth
isn’t meant to “get in the way,” it’s meant to preserve stability when the system meets load, variance, and errors.
A system with no limits functions nicely under ideal conditions. A system with limits functions even when those conditions break.
The Danger of “Allowing Everything”
The big danger in “allowing everything” is that it defers hard decisions. Instead of choosing what matters and what’s critical, everything stays open - until, at some moment, nothing works.
And then the failure isn’t localized, it’s system-wide.
Limits Are a Design Principle, Not a Patch
Rate limits, backpressure, quotas, timeouts - these aren’t local fixes, they’re a statement about the system’s character:
what it protects, and what it’s willing to sacrifice to stay alive.
The Analogy
A road with no signs, no speed limit, and no lanes. Everyone is allowed everything.
Traffic flows freely - until it comes to a complete stop.
Not because of an inability to drive, but because of a lack of boundaries.
