Good intentions. Big risk.
In production, perfection isn’t a neutral goal. Often, it’s a risk factor.
Why Perfection Is Dangerous for Live Systems
Every “small” improvement adds:
- Complexity
- Dependency
- And more assumptions that need to hold
And the more “complete” a solution is:
- The harder it is to understand
- The harder it is to change
- And the harder it is to stop during a failure
A system that’s perfect on paper can be fragile in reality.
Good Enough Isn’t Unprofessionalism
Good Enough Engineering isn’t giving up. It’s a conscious choice.
It’s the understanding that:
- Not every risk needs to be solved now
- Not every edge needs to be closed
- And not every rare scenario justifies permanent complexity
Good Enough asks: what’s enough for the system to hold up - even when things go wrong?
When to Stop
The stopping point isn’t purely technical. It’s contextual.
You stop when:
- The next addition improves elegance, not stability
- The solution is already hard to explain to the team
- And the operational cost is rising faster than the benefit
That’s the moment “just a bit more” starts working against you.
A Solution With Margins, Not a Perfect Solution
Stable systems prefer: a solution with room to maneuver over a solution with nowhere to move.
Margins enable:
- Mistakes without collapse
- Changes without panic
- And failures without losing control
Perfection, on the other hand, closes off options.
The Bottom Line
Good engineering isn’t measured by how much is covered.
It’s measured by:
- How fast you can understand what’s happening
- How easy it is to stop damage
- And how safe it is to change direction
Good Enough Engineering isn’t a compromise on quality - it’s a compromise with reality.
