The Illusion: “We Didn’t Break Anything”

Backward compatibility is perceived as basic hygiene:

  • We didn’t change a signature
  • We didn’t remove a field
  • We didn’t break existing clients

It looks like we preserved stability.

But that’s a partial illusion.

Backward compatibility isn’t a state - it’s an accumulating commitment.
