What Is a Protocol - And Why Absolute Freedom Creates Chaos
After understanding that communication isn’t a physical connection but an agreement, the natural question arises: what does such an agreement between computers actually look like?
The answer is: a protocol.
But before defining it technically, it’s important to understand the idea behind it.
A Protocol Is a Framework for Behavior
A protocol isn’t “a way to send data.” It’s a framework that defines how two sides behave toward each other over time.
It determines:
- Who speaks first
- Who responds
- What counts as a valid response
- What to do when there’s no answer
- How to handle uncertainty
Without such a framework, each side acts according to its own logic - and the result isn’t flexibility, it’s an inability to communicate.
Why Freedom Is a Problem in Communication
Intuitively, freedom sounds like an advantage: each side can send whenever it wants, as much as it wants, however it wants.
But in communication, that kind of freedom creates a deep problem: the other side doesn’t know what to expect.
If one computer:
- Sends information without announcing it in advance
- Changes the data structure on the fly
- Sometimes responds, sometimes ignores
The computer on the other end can’t tell the difference between:
- A delay
- A failure
- The end of communication
- Or just “normal” behavior
In other words, without rules - there’s no meaning.
A Protocol Is a Conscious Trade-Off
A protocol always involves giving something up:
- Giving up spontaneity
- Giving up absolute freedom
- Giving up improvisation
And in return you get a critical capability: you can expect something.
When both sides operate by the same protocol, every action gains context:
- If no response arrived - that means something
- If a partial message arrived - you know how to interpret it
- If the connection was cut - there’s a way to respond
The protocol doesn’t prevent failures. It prevents confusion.
A Protocol as the Foundation of Systems
Once you understand that a protocol is a behavioral agreement, it’s easy to see why it exists at every layer of a system:
- Between computers
- Between services
- Between components within the same process
Any time a protocol isn’t well defined - the system might work, but only until it meets load, change, or failure.
