What Is YOLO, Really - And Why Did It Become the Standard for Real-Time Object Detection?

In the world of computer vision there are countless models that detect objects in images. But for years, most of them were slow, complex, or required two separate runs of the model - one to find where an object is, and another to figure out what it is. Then YOLO arrived and changed the whole approach: object detection in a single shot, in real time.

What Is YOLO?

YOLO - You Only Look Once - is an object detection model that performs the entire process in a single pass of the network. Instead of:

  • Identifying suspicious regions
  • Running classification on them

YOLO does everything together: image processing → locating objects → classifying them → predicting their position.
