Why Most Inference Systems Don’t Utilize Their Hardware

When an Inference system is slow, the finger almost automatically points at the hardware: the GPU isn’t strong enough, we need another accelerator, maybe a newer model.

But in most cases - that’s not the problem.

The hardware is there. The computation is fast. The performance is still disappointing.

The real reason: coordination.

Inference Isn’t a Single Action. It’s a Chain.

A request comes in through the network, passes through the CPU, reaches the accelerator, and comes back.

If one of the parts isn’t timed correctly - even the most powerful hardware will sit waiting.

In many systems, the accelerator works only a small fraction of the time. Not because it’s slow - but because it’s waiting.

Waiting for:

  • Data that hasn’t arrived yet
  • A CPU still busy managing things
  • A queue that hasn’t filled up
  • Or a decision that hasn’t been made
