The Quiet Belief
A server is a computer.
A physical computer, with an IP address, a disk, and memory. If it crashes - “the server went down”. If it’s slow - “the server is underpowered”.
This assumption feels natural. And it’s also wrong.
The Architectural Reality
A server is a role, not an object.
Sometimes that role is implemented on a physical computer. Sometimes on a virtual machine. And sometimes - on several layers in between that don’t feel like a “server” at all.
What software experiences as a server, and what infrastructure actually implements - are almost never the same thing.
