Routing is a basic decision that repeats over and over: where does the next request get sent.
Routing, Without Complications
In a system with several components capable of doing the same work, routing is the choice of which one gets the task.
Not who’s able to right now - but who receives it right now.
Why This Matters So Much
Even if all the components are completely identical on paper, their actual behavior is never identical.
If work is sent without thought:
- Some components will be overloaded
- Others will stay empty
- And the system will look “fine,” but feel unstable
Not because of a lack of resources - but because of how they’re distributed.
The Analogy
Imagine a checkout area with several cashiers. If they’re all free - each new customer has to pick one.
If most people automatically go to the same cashier, a line forms there, while the other registers stay quiet.
The problem isn’t the number of cashiers. It’s the choice of which one.
Good Routing Looks Boring
When routing works correctly:
- There are no unusual queues
- No single component is always overloaded
- And no other component is always idle
Everything just flows.
