What Is a PCB, and Why Is It the Foundation of Every Computer?

When we talk about “hardware,” we picture chips, processors, and memory - but all of these need a place where they can connect and communicate with each other. That place is called a printed circuit board, or PCB for short.

What’s Actually on the Board?

A PCB is a rigid surface (usually made of fiberglass and insulating materials) on which copper traces are “printed” - like tiny roads connecting the electronic components.

The components themselves (processor, memory, etc.) sit on the board and receive from it:

  • Electrical current - to operate.
  • Communication - to exchange data between them.

This board is essentially the “nervous system” of every electronic device, from a computer to an AI accelerator.

What’s the Difference Between a PCB and a Motherboard?

A motherboard is simply a specific type of PCB - one that centralizes the entire computer system:

  • Processor (CPU)
  • Memory (RAM, DDR, or HBM)
  • Storage connections (SSD, NVMe)
  • Communication interfaces (PCIe, USB, NIC)

While other PCBs can be dedicated to a specific purpose (for example, a small board connecting a camera to a processor), the motherboard is the main PCB that manages communication between all the components in the system.

An Architectural Tip

In dedicated accelerators like advanced GPUs, there are sometimes several different PCBs - one for computation, one for managing communication, and one for power delivery - each designed to shorten electrical distances and minimize latency.
