The word optimum sounds precise, almost absolute. The best point. The right solution.

But in practice, optimum is one of the most context-dependent concepts there is. Without context - it has no meaning.

Where Does the Concept of “Optimum” Come From?

Optimum comes from Latin, and it means: the best, the most suitable.

Even at its origin, the meaning isn’t “perfect” - it’s the best relative to something.

The Basic Definition

An optimum is a point that maximizes or minimizes a defined objective.

Three components must exist:

  • A space of options - what’s allowed to be chosen
  • An objective function - what’s being measured
  • Constraints - what can’t be crossed

Without all three - there’s no optimum, only a preference.

Why Is the Concept So Confusing?

Because it’s used without specifying:

  • What the goal is
  • What the constraints are
  • And at what scale

When someone says:

“This is the optimal solution”

The real question is:

Optimal relative to what?

Without an answer - the sentence is empty.
