Why Inference Is a System of Trade-offs, Not Optimization
There’s a natural tendency to search for the optimum. The point where everything works out: low Latency, high throughput, excellent accuracy, and minimal cost.
But in Inference, that point simply doesn’t exist.
Inference isn’t an optimization problem. It’s a system of trade-offs.
An Inference System Has Several Key Metrics
- Latency
- Throughput
- Accuracy
- Stability
- Cost
- Resource consumption
And they’re not independent.
Improving one almost always hurts another.
Lowering latency? Sometimes that comes at the expense of throughput.
Increasing batch size to utilize hardware? Latency spikes.
Improving accuracy with a bigger model? Cost rises, and time stretches out.
Hardening stability and timing? You give up “maximum utilization” of resources.
There’s no mistake here. This is reality.
The Conscious Trade-off
A lot of the frustration around Inference comes from trying to “solve” the problem.
But there’s no single correct solution. There’s a choice.
And the choice always includes giving something up.
This is where the conscious trade-off comes in.
Not: “how do we do everything as well as possible?”
But:
- What matters most to us right now
- What we’re willing to give up
- And which failure mode we prefer when things go wrong
This isn’t purely a technical question. It’s an engineering question.
This Is Where Engineering Maturity Shows
Not in the ability to improve a number, but in the ability to say:
“Yes, this is worse on this metric - and we chose it deliberately.”

Good Inference doesn’t look for the perfect point. It chooses a stable set of trade-offs.
Because in the real world, a system that stands by its trade-offs is stronger than a system chasing an optimum that doesn’t exist.
