Early-stage systems are built on good intentions: that everything will work. that components will be stable. that failures will be the exception.
Mature systems start from a completely different assumption: things will break.
Not maybe. Not “if.” But when, where, and how the system will respond.
This is called Design for Failure.
What Is Design for Failure, Really?
Design for failure is a design principle where you don’t try to prevent every failure, but instead assume failures will happen - and design the system so it keeps functioning despite that.
Where Do People Usually Go Wrong?
They go wrong by designing systems around the ideal scenario:
- All services available
- Reasonable response times
- Consistent data
- Stable connections
And then, when something breaks:
- Everything gets stuck
- A minor fault triggers a broad collapse
- It’s hard to understand what happened and why
The problem isn’t the failure itself - it’s that the system didn’t know how to live with it.
The Analogy
Imagine a city designed on the assumption that there will never be traffic jams.
No detours. No alternative transportation. No load routing.
On the day one road closes - the entire city is paralyzed.
A well-built, established city doesn’t prevent accidents. It’s built so that one accident doesn’t shut everything down.
What Does a System Designed for Failure Look Like?
Such a system:
- Isolates components so a failure doesn’t spread
- Allows partial failure instead of total collapse
- Detects failures quickly and responds predictably
The goal isn’t zero faults - it’s controlled behavior during a fault.
A Mental Framing Tip
There’s a deep difference between a young system and a mature one:
A young system asks: “how do we make sure this doesn’t break?”
A mature system asks: “what happens when this breaks - and how do we limit the damage?”
This isn’t pessimism. It’s engineering responsibility.
