What Is AI Deployment, Really - And How Is It Different From “Running a Model”?
If training a model is like teaching a student, then Deployment is the moment that student steps out into the world - and starts answering real questions, in real time.
What Does the Deployment Process Include?
1. Packaging
A trained model is saved as a file (e.g., model.pt or model.onnx). At this stage, everything needed for it to run in a real system is added - inference code, drivers, dependencies, exact library versions, and more.
2. Serving
The model doesn’t “run” once - it needs to answer many requests, simultaneously. So it’s wrapped in an API or a dedicated server that accepts requests (input) and returns predictions (output), sometimes millions of times a day.
3. Monitoring
In production, models behave differently than during training. It’s necessary to track Latency, Throughput, data Drift, and of course - the quality of the results.
4. Optimization
It’s not enough for the model to “work” - it needs to work fast and efficiently. This is where things like Quantization, Batch Processing, and hardware-specific optimization (GPU, CPU, DLA, FPGA) come in.
Why Is This Critical?
A model that isn’t deployed correctly can:
